Blacks commit more violent crime than whites (even given the lower percentage of the population), a large percentage of black crime is against whites, and blacks commit more hate crimes than whites. With all else equal, I have a higher level of distrust of blacks than whites. This seems like the rational precaution, so why is it so socially wrong?

I agree, and I can’t understand how people think using race/culture for a mascot is even remotely appropriate. If any other race/culture was appropriated for a mascot the way American Indians are, everyone would be up in arms about it. It is akin to calling that culture animals. I think that we need to protest the use of their culture/race in this manner.

Here’s one of the various problems with, for example, “dressing up as a Native American” for Halloween:
Society defines “Native American” or “American Indian” as a racial group. There are a whole different host of problems with this (for example, it erases the diversity of the thousands of cultures and tens of millions of individuals that lived in the Americas in the pre-Columbian era), but for the moment I won’t address these issues, I’ll be addressing a different issue.
So, if Native American is a racial group, akin to black, white, Asian, et cetera, then “dressing up as a Native American” by putting on knock-off stereotypical plains-Indian garb is as racist as putting on black-face and saying that you’re going to be an African American for Halloween. A culture, a race (even if race is societally constructed), an ethnic group is not a costume, is not a set of tropes and stereotypes.
You don’t get to be a Chinaman for Halloween, you don’t get to be part of the Jim Crow Show for Halloween, just like you don’t get to be a Native American for Halloween. I mean, you can technically do what you want, but the bottom line is that it’s racist.

You, and people like you seem to think that all Racism is this easy to see, easy to beat opponent that involves outright hatred for a race. It’s not, it’s subtle, little things like members of your race generally being criminals/drug addicts or hell, even non existent in the media. No media coverage when a child of color goes missing/gets abducted. No help when your schools are failing you, when the system seems built to keep you where you are.
And when you’re a minority it beats down on you, erodes you bit by bit and leaves you raw. Then you build up a shell to protect yourself only to have it torn down again every fucking day. THEN when we do get a voice, when we do speak out against all the little things that get to us we’re told “LOL GET OVER IT.” or “THAT’S NOT A REAL PROBLEM.” And do you want to know the coup de grace? When we minorities create safe spaces where we can vent and talk about these issues we get told that we’re the problem and that we’re the real racists because think of the poor white people.
And wanna know what every single white person will readily tell me? Do you want to know? I BET YOUR ASS YOU DO. These people that I just mentioned will tell me, straight to my fucking face, “I’m not racist.”
If you’re going to use “nigga” every other word and then get upset when I use it because I’m white…that makes you the racist.

Here’s an example from my life: I’ll call you out for using “Oriental” as a way to homogenize all Asian people, and I’ll probably be even more fervent when you do it as a joke. When you roll your eyes at me and say I’m being “politically correct,” you’re essentially saying that it’s my problem and not a problem inherently in the terminology of “Oriental.” You’re saying that the problem is not, in fact, the history of the historical commodification and homogenization of a people from an entire continent, and that the problem is certainly not the Europeans who decided to engage in such activities and reap the benefits from several Asian cultures.
Nope, the problem is obviously me and my tiny little feelings which are apparently less important than yours, and so you can use “politically correct” as a way to further diminish those feelings because it obviously means I am wrong and you are right. Good for you, rebellious savior who defeated the politically correct half-Asian lesbian and her evil evil feelings!
So yeah, people should stop waving “you’re being politically correct!” as if it’s some kind of penalty card you can use, because to me, it just shows that they think someone’s right to condescendingly joke or disparage is more important than someone’s right not to feel disrespected. Excuse me if I’m walking an extra step to make sure people feeling valued and respected.
